One hundred and seventy-five years ago, before the Eiffel Tower was built and only a few years into the colony of South Australia, St Andrew’s School was founded in Walkerville. To commemorate this milestone, Hyphen teamed up with St Andrew’s School, producing two books and an installation that celebrate its rich history.
The adults book is a detailed collection of stories, anecdotes, quotes and images that highlight the significant moments and people behind the school’s many successes.
Several of these people are also featured in the children’s book where their stories, paired with student illustrations, can be enjoyed by the students of St Andrews.

For the school’s anniversary event, we designed an 8.4-metre-long timeline and a series of 6 profile boards. The timeline highlights the key moments and people of St Andrew’s School throughout its 175 years, weaving in major world events. Notable figures throughout the school’s history are showcased on their own boards, reminding staff and students of the generations of greatness that came before them.
Working on such a large scale for the installation brought many challenges. There was plenty of printing and tacking to the wall as we experimented with scale and hierarchy. We used gradients and various effects to enhance archival images that were blown up. Overall, the result is polished yet warm, communicating a strong sense of pride.

The response from our community has been overwhelmingly positive. In an increasingly digital world, the books stand as a tangible, engaging celebration of 175 years of Nurturing Greatness – honouring our history, our people, and most importantly, the children.
