Short Description
To celebrate their multicultural community, Westbourne Grammar School invited families with diverse backgrounds to contribute stories and recipes from their culture of origin to make this cookbook. Honouring the connection between food, family and community, this collaboration was a beautiful way to bring people together.
Our challenge was to bring together 35 stories and 91 recipes, retaining their individual flavours but presenting them as a cohesive whole – just like a school! The resulting book looks good enough to eat.
We worked with Hyphen to produce a high-quality publication that recognises and expresses an amazing collection of recipes. It also respects the families who so generously participated and shared insights into their personal stories. Belonging is a publication that makes everyone at Westbourne very proud.
What a pleasurable project! The idea of doing a cookbook that celebrated the school’s cultural diversity was the school’s, and we jumped at the chance to turn an idea into a reality. Interviewing families of various backgrounds brought forward incredible migrant stories (and some delicious treats along the way) all connected by the shared experiences of food. The families contributed their traditional recipes, then reproduced them in the school’s kitchen to the delight of our wonderful photographer and food stylist.
