The Story of Canberra Airport
We were thrilled to be invited by the Canberra Airport team to help celebrate their 25th anniversary by sharing their incredible story.
This is no ordinary airport. As its visionary founder, Terry Snow, put it: ‘Our goal was to deliver an exceptional airport that matched the city’s size and importance as Australia’s national capital. We genuinely believe we’ve accomplished our mission and provided Canberra with the airport it deserves.’
Bringing this story to life was a true privilege. Our team created a stunning visual book that captures the airport’s journey – from its humble beginnings as a paddock to its transformation into a world-class gateway. Each page highlights key milestones, iconic moments and the inspiring vision that made it all possible.
If you love stories of innovation, resilience and bold dreams, you’ll find this book a fascinating read. Dive in and discover how Canberra Airport became a symbol of excellence.
A Runway in a Paddock
Canberra Airport’s journey began long before its global aspirations. Originally a modest airstrip, its early days reflected the changing needs of the region. Established after Canberra was chosen as the nation’s capital in 1908, the airstrip became a military base during World War II.
The airport’s real transformation began in 1998, when the Howard government sold it as part of an initiative to privatise major airports.
Terry Snow’s Bold Transformation
The turning point came with the Snow family’s acquisition of the airport. Where others saw aging infrastructure, Terry Snow saw potential. He envisioned not just a functioning airport but a hub for Canberra – an asset that would redefine the city’s connection to the world.
Snow’s foresight extended beyond aviation. He anticipated the end of Australia’s two-airline duopoly and knew that lower airfares and increased competition would benefit the city and its residents. His vision laid the foundation for a new era of growth.
Overcoming Challenges
The redevelopment of Canberra Airport into the largest private-sector infrastructure project in Australia was no small feat. This journey faced significant challenges, from the collapse of Ansett Australia and the impact of 9/11 to the GFC. Despite these hurdles, the airport emerged stronger, a testament to the Snow family’s determination.
Pushing Boundaries
The story of Canberra Airport goes beyond runways and terminals. The Snow family future-proofed its business by developing Brindabella Business Park – a thriving campus for aerospace, defence industries, government departments and private businesses.
A Legacy of Ambition and Excellence
The story of Canberra Airport is one of vision, perseverance and success.
We are proud to have played a role in documenting the airport’s remarkable achievements. This project serves as a reminder of the power of ambition and the importance of preserving the stories that shape our communities.
The Best Little Airport in the World was written by Nicolas Brasch and published by Bounce Books, an imprint of Hyphen.
